The Kryvyi Rih mining and metallurgical plant, PJSC “ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog” (AMKR, the Dnepropetrovsk region) on Monday called for the newly appointed OSCE coordinator on economic and environmental security in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kirovograd regions Stephen Douglas for the collection of information on environmental security in the region.
As reported in a press release AMKR Tuesday, the first visit of a representative of the special OSCE monitoring mission on the enterprise. Douglas met with the leadership of the plant Director of the Department for environmental protection Liana Maksimenko, the chief legal officer of the enterprise Artem Usov Filipjevi, the control Manager of investment Department of engineering and investment Andrey Marinichev.

In addition, Stephen Douglas called for three environmental laboratories of the Department of environmental protection: laboratory for atmospheric air protection, laboratory for analytical control and monitoring of waters, as well as the laboratory where you define the mass concentration of pollutants in industrial emissions, ambient air and water using modern highly sensitive method of atomic emission spectrometry”, – stated in a press release
According to the General counsel AMKR Artem Filipyev, after the privatization of enterprises ArcelorMittal invested $9.2 billion in the modernization of production (including the cost of the asset).
“At the time of purchase none of the production units did not meet the requirements of the environmental standards of Ukraine, not to mention the European standards. Over these 13 years has largely been able to replace outdated equipment with modern, environmentally friendly. However, to rebuild the mill in one day is impossible. Change takes time. The company decided to invest another $1.8 billion in the modernization of production in the next five years that will reduce emissions by 50-55%,” said Philip, who was quoted by the press service.

Prior to this Vladimir Zelensky, a native of Krivoy Rog, criticized the company for failing in terms of commitments to improve the environmental situation in the region and encouraged to provide targeted financial support to affected persons due to harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Few days later, on July 17, it became known that the SBU opened a criminal case against AMKR according to the article 441 of the Criminal code of Ukraine – “ecocide”, involving deprivation of liberty for a term from eight to 15 years.
The acting head of SBU Ivan Bakanov 22 July accused management of AMKR in the negligent use of the investment Lakshmi Mittal. “I am sure that Lakshmi Mittal, who is a powerful international investor trying to implement this investment… not planning to do anything wrong. But the management, who is working in the enterprise, careless attitude to his duties. Therefore, it should be appropriately at least disciplinary punished,” he said.
“ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog” denied the accusations of the SBU reported a loss of $1 million at the end of this month due to forced stop of commissioning on the machine continuous casting No. 3 after a search of the SBU on 20 July. After that, top managers of “ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog” in late July and met with President Vladimir Zelensky, and also held talks with representatives of his Office. The parties discussed the possibilities of improvement of ecological situation and implementation of social projects in Kryvyi Rih. The result reached agreement on five of the five steps in the continued modernization of the enterprise and reduce the impact on the environment and on the implementation of social projects.

Corporation Mittal Steel has acquired of 93.02% of shares of JSC “Krivorozhstal” at open competition on October 24, 2005, for 24.2 billion UAH at the starting price of UAH 10 billion, after which the steel plant was renamed “Mittal Steel Krivoy Rog”, and later “ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog”.
