GENEVA, July 15. /TASS/. Special envoy of the UN Secretary General on Syria Staffan de Mistura said the change of rhetoric on Syria in the Security Council of the world organization.

“It was an important meeting on Friday in the UN security Council, which expressed support for what we do, – the diplomat said at a press conference on the results of the seventh round of inter-Syrian negotiations. – There was something I had not seen for a long time in the UN security Council, – qualitative change of rhetoric”.

“It is obvious that the talks on Syria in Astana, in particular the initiatives on areas of de-escalation, negotiations of presidents of Russia and the United States in Hamburg, a meeting between the presidents of France and the United States in Paris are in line with those priorities on which we work together – said the emissary. All this helps the atmosphere of our work .”

No breakthrough

Direct negotiations

De Mistura said that he hoped for direct negotiations of representatives of the government of the Arab Republic and the opposition in the new round of meetings in Geneva in September. “We will conduct a new round in early September. Parties need to prepare meaningful in the four “baskets” (the Constitution, elections, governance and the fight against terrorism – approx. TASS), said the emissary. – Want them to sit in the same room at the negotiating table”.

“There was a time, helping our work that could push all parties in the end to sit in one room and start negotiations on the merits,” he said.

“We need to help the opposition to cooperate more closely with each other. Mechanism technical advice of the opposition was very effective in creating the Foundation for [direct] negotiations, said the emissary. – Among the opposition created what we saw two months ago is mutual trust.”
