In the second half of August hits one of the four multi-day fasts of the Church year Dormition. It is considered just as strict as lent, but the requirement is more pleasant, after all, to indulge in familiar food and activities recommended just a few weeks, and the period is festive.
When Dormition fast begins
Dormition fast – the only post in the Orthodox Church, established in honor of the Mother of God. Accordingly, he starts two weeks before the great feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which is celebrated annually on August 28. Hence the name.

That is, unlike other fasts of the Church year, the Dormition fast is not transitional – it met at the same time from 14 to 27 August.
It is extremely interesting that it was not always so. Before 1000 he was part of the so-called “compensatory” summer of the post – for those who do not observe lent. But human weakness was excluded the entire month of July. So, the first part of the post was to end on the feast of the apostles Peter and Paul July 12, and the second formed a Dormition fast.
