The find is rare, not only because of its size, but because of the age. It existed when the Universe was 1.8 billion years.
An international team of astronomers have found an ancient dead galaxy of enormous size. Writes about this site Phys.org.
The team of astronomers observed a rare galaxy, designated as XMM-2599 using the MOSFIRE spectrograph at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii.
The discovery was giant size – something like 300 billion Suns. It makes the galaxy ultramassive. In addition, according to the data collected, it existed 12 billion years ago. Then the age of the Universe was 1.8 billion years, and such a supermassive galaxy was an incredible rarity.

Earlier XMM-2599 demonstrated a high rate of star formation – a thousand solar masses per year. For unknown reasons this process is completely stopped. Contemporary mathematical models assume that the process of star formation in these galaxies should last longer.
Among the possible options astronomers call the activation of the black hole at the center of the galaxy, or lack of substance for starburst.
The day before was discovered a mysterious repeating signal space. The Correspondent also wrote that astronomers recorded the explosion of a space laser.
