The permanent representative of France to the UN, Nicolas de Riviere on Tuesday during the meeting of the UN security Council welcomed a number of positive developments related to the situation in the Donbas and emphasized the need to strengthen this momentum to resolve the conflict in the East of the country.
“Based on recent positive developments now need to create momentum, aimed at building trust and necessary for the settlement of the conflict,” he said.
According to him, in the last few days and weeks there have been encouraging developments, such as the resumption of the tripartite liaison group. He also noted the withdrawal of troops near the village of Lugansk. In his opinion, this progress has been achieved thanks to the actions of the Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
In addition, the French representative welcomed the resumption of contacts between Moscow and Kiev, with the result that the presidents of Russia and Ukraine held a telephone conversation.
He also called on “everyone to remain vigilant” because, according to him, the achievement is still too fragile, however, they provide an opportunity to create a constructive trend and restarting the process.
French permanent representative to the UN and the us diplomat Rodney hunter, speaking in the UN security Council on behalf of Washington, has condemned Russia’s decision to simplify the issuance of passports for residents of Donbass. According to Nicolas de Riviera, this step is contrary to the spirit of the Minsk agreements.
“I want to reiterate that France condemns the decision to simplify the issuing of Russian passports to Ukrainian citizens living in certain territories – in the district of Donetsk and Lugansk,” – said de Riviere.
On the eve of the fifth anniversary since the tragedy of flight MH17, shot down in the skies over Donbass, France and the United States once again expressed condolences to the bereaved families and expressed the need to bring to justice the perpetrators of the plane crash.
In addition, France and the USA in the UN security Council called for the release of 24 Ukrainian sailors, was taken into custody by Russia in November last year in the Kerch Strait.
“The United States calls on Russia to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, including its territorial waters, and we echo the call for Russia to immediately release detained Ukrainian sailors and ships.
