Foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Mas urged to give Germany a place in the UN Security Council in 2019 and 2020.

Berlin ready to take on more responsibility, assured Mas on Wednesday, March 28, speaking at the United Nations in new York.

“We live in a time when the world is full of conflicts. We live in a time when we in the UN more, not less, as some believe,” − said the German politician.

He recalled that Germany is the second largest donor to the UN and the second country in the number of peacekeepers. In 2017, the country made to the UN budget of about 3.4 billion euros, the missions organization involved 1300 German peacekeepers .

The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members (Russia, China, UK, USA and France) and ten non-permanent members. Every year the UN General Assembly elects five non-permanent members for a two year term on a geographical basis.

The five seats allocated to the States of Asia and Africa, one for Eastern Europe, two for Latin America and the Caribbean and two for Western Europe and others. This year applications in the latter category, along with Germany, has also filed Belgium and Israel. Elections will be held on 8 June.
