Head of the Special OSCE monitoring mission in Ukraine (SMM) Ertugrul Apakan announces significant deterioration of the security situation in the East of Ukraine, the official OSCE website

“We note with concern the sharp deterioration of the situation. The number of violations of ceasefire reached the level that we have not fixed it since February of this year,” – said E. during the meeting on Tuesday.

According to the report, from 11 to 17 December this year, according to preliminary data, the SMM, the OSCE has recorded nearly 16 thousand violations of the ceasefire, which is 35% more than in the previous week .

Observations of the mission indicate that the parties renew the commitment to observance of the cease-fire, after which one notes a steady increase in the level of violence, the culmination of which become fierce fighting, resulting in injuries and deaths, as well as disruptions in the functioning and destruction of vital civilian infrastructure, the statement added.

“The normalization of the situation when civilians can return to normal daily life without fear of being shot or run into mines is the first step towards a lasting and sustainable peace”, – summed up the E. Apakan.
