Boom on the border of Hungary with Serbia
Hungary built a fence on the southern border to stop the massive influx of migrants in the EU.
The Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban in a letter to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker urged Brussels to pay his country € 400 million as compensation for construction of boundary wall on the southern borders of the European Union. The EU should take the half of the costs associated with the construction and maintenance of fencing on the southern border of Hungary, said the head of the staff of Orban, Janos Lazar.
“If we talk about European solidarity, we have to talk about border security and then solidarity should be realized in practice. Therefore, the EU should assume part of the costs,” said Lazar.
In 2015, more than 400 thousand illegal migrants moved to Western Europe through Hungary. The government in Budapest have built a fence with barbed wire on the border with Serbia and then Croatia . For the protection of the barriers involved about three thousand of the guards.
Construction of boundary wall contributed to the closure of the so-called Balkan route on which many refugees were moved to Germany. Since then, migrants almost never use that route. The EU, however, sharply criticized Hungary’s decision on the construction of border barriers.
Recall that in April, Hungary has completed the construction of the second line of fencing on the border with Serbia.
