In Chile there were the first victims of the riots that occurred during protests in the capital, Santiago. Three people died in a fire in one of the supermarkets, said the mayor Carl Rubilar Sunday, October 20.
“We have to report that three people died in a fire at the supermarket. Two burned to death, and the third was taken to hospital in serious condition, but later died” – said Rubillar in a speech, video of which is published in her Twitter.
In turn, city police reported 156 were injured during the protests.
Recall that the protests that escalated into riots and clashes with police began in Santiago on Monday, October 6. They caused a rise in the cost of travel in metro for 30 peso (0.04 USD) to a high of 850 pesos ($1.2).
Initially peaceful rally by 18 October escalated into clashes with police officers – people set up barricades, banging pots in protest against increased prices, caused damage to many metro stations, set fire to one of the shopping centers, buses. Chilean President Sebastian Pinera declared a state of emergency in the provinces of Santiago and Chacabuco, but the protests continued.
