In the Netherlands, died 11 newborns whose mothers took part in a scientific experiment – during pregnancy they took viagra. As reported by TV channel NOS, the study was conducted in 10 hospitals in the Netherlands from 2015.

93 women with decreased functioning of the placenta were given sildenafil, the substance sold under the name viagra. Scientists had hoped that sildenafil used to treat erectile dysfunction in men and pulmonary hypertension, will help to improve blood flow through the placenta.

The experiment was stopped last week when an independent Committee that monitored the study found that 17 children were born with lung problems and 11 of them died.

During the study, another 90 women took a placebo pill with no active ingredients . In this group, three infants were born with lung involvement, none of them died.

The head of research Wessel Ganzevoort said that every death of a child of the “sildenafil group” will be investigated thoroughly. According to him, it is possible that the newborn would have died anyway, regardless of the mother receiving the drug.
