PYEONGCHANG /South Korea/, March 18. /TASS/. The President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Andrew Parsons declared closed the XII Paralympic winter games 2018. The closing ceremony was held at the Olympic stadium in Pyeongchang.
During the ceremony have become well-known winners of this award named after Dr. Hwang Yun Dai, awarded to the two athletes (male and female) at the end of every Paralympic games since 1988. Winners of the award are athletes who most fully embody the spirit of the Games and Paralympic values. Following the results of Games in Pyeongchang, the winners of the award were new Zealand skier Adam Hall (class standing) and the Finnish cross-country skier and biathlete Blue Ur (class “sitting”), the ceremony was attended itself hwan Yun Dai, and Vice-President of the IPC Dwayne Cale .
In his speech, Parsons paid tribute to the deceased on March 14 at the age of 76 years of British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. “At the opening ceremony of the Paralympics 2012, he noted that everyone is different, and there are no common standards for us,’ said Parsons. – He urged us all to look at the stars and not on your feet, and the last 10 days the stars were shining brightly here in Pyeongchang”.
Also the head of IPC highlighted the strength and endurance of the Paralympic athletes participating in the Games. “You showed that through the spirit’s power can reach incredible heights,’ said Parsons. – You copied all of the theory and outlined the new boundaries. Every generation is given a chance to change the world, and it’s your time to become role models and to build a more open society”.
The medal standings of the Paralympics
Paralympic games were held from March 9. Athletes played 80 sets of medals in biathlon, skiing, Alpine skiing, snowboarding, sledge hockey and wheelchair Curling. All the Games were attended by 567 athletes from 49 countries.
Russian athletes under a neutral flag, and neutral status of Paralympic athletes won 24 medals, including eight gold, ten silver and six bronze, and took second place in the unofficial medal standings. Due to the removal of the Russian Paralympic Committee in Pyeongchang could be only 30 Russian athletes and six presenters who helped athletes with visual impairment.
First place in the medal standings ranked team USA, which was represented by 68 athletes and won 36 medals (13-15-8). The third place team from Canada, consisting of 55 athletes, she has 28 medals (8-4-16).
The next winter Paralympic games will be held in Beijing in 2022.
