MOSCOW, June 28. /TASS/. The delegation of Japanese officials and business representatives arrived on the island of Kunashir and Sakhalin region started to inspect objects, which can be implemented in a number of joint Russian-Japanese projects. The delegation was accompanied by the Governor of the island region, Oleg Kozhemyako, reported on Wednesday the press service of the government of the Sakhalin region.

“Islands for the first time attended such a large and representative business mission from Japan. This is a big step in the development of bilateral relations, clarifying important parameters for further joint activities in the Southern Kurils . Of course, a lot of work before the projects go into action. We will make every effort to ensure that the Islands businessmen from Russia and Japan can work comfortably,” said Kozhemyako.
He stressed that the regional government is ready to form the necessary measures to support Japanese business using the mechanisms of public-private partnerships, subsidization, and to provide the decision of questions of technical connection of objects to engineering infrastructure.
“For us it is important to find as many points of contact with the Russian side on the Kuril Islands. The main task – to hold the so-called substantive examination of objects. He will highlight the most promising areas for cooperation and the result is more accurately determine the specific projects”, – said a special adviser to Japanese Prime Minister eiichi Hasegawa.
On Wednesday, one group of the delegation will visit the enterprises of fishing industry of Kunashir, and two others will visit the objects energy, health, retail and tourism. In the evening the business mission on the ship “Atopica” going on Iturup island, and on June 30 will operate on the island of Shikotan, where there will be a summing up of the visit.
A delegation of 70 Japanese officials and business representatives arrived in the southern part of the Kuril Islands in the framework of implementation of the agreement reached during the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe in Moscow on April 27. In the late 90-ies Russia and Japan have tried to agree on joint economic activities on southern Kuriles, but then to specific projects is not reached due to disagreements over legal issues.
