From the International space station launched a satellite RemoveDebris designed for experiments in earth orbit clean of debris. On Thursday, June 22, according to space.

According to NASA, in orbit of the Earth is 8 thousand tons of space debris. RemoveDebris experimental satellite developed by engineers from the British company SSTL, as well as experts from several other European countries and South Africa, should help to solve this problem. RemoveDebris will use a net and harpoon, and two CubeSat satellite.

Stokilogrammovye the device was launched into orbit around the Earth on June 20.

In September, the device will run one of the cube-Sats in open space at a distance of 5 to 7 meters and catch it with a net .

In December RemoveDebris proceed to the second phase of the mission. Using camera and lidar device will be to perform an experiment on visual navigation. This will help to track and characterize the debris in orbit.

In February RemoveDebris will release the harpoon, designed to catch debris with a maximum size of 10×10 cm, in a special drawer. Unlike the network, it works at a close distance – up to five feet.

If successful, a space cleaner will deploy a sail to gain quick access into the upper layers of Earth’s atmosphere and burn it.

Earlier it was reported that the company SpaceX has won a contract to send a secret satellite of the U.S. air force into orbit.
