Federica Mogherini noted that the EU does not recognize elections of the Russian Federation on the Crimean Peninsula.

The illegal annexation of Crimea is a direct threat to international security and order. On behalf of the European Union, said EU high representative for foreign Affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini in connection with the third anniversary of the occupation of Crimea by Russia.

“For three years of illegal annexation of the Crimea and Sevastopol, the European Union remains firmly committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The EU once again States that do not recognize and continues to condemn this violation of international law. This poses a direct threat to international security, with dire consequences for the international legal order that protects the unity and sovereignty of the States”, – noted in the EU.

Mogherini noted that the EU is also fully committed to the implementation of the policy of non-recognition of illegal annexation, including the use of restricted actions.

“The European Union does not recognize the Russian Federation elections on the Crimean Peninsula, as well as elected representatives at local and national levels,” said EU high representative.

The EU noted that for the past three years, the militarization of the Peninsula continues to have a negative impact on the situation in security sphere in the Black sea region. Also in the Crimea is deteriorating situation on human rights.

“The rights of the Crimean Tatars were violated after the close of the Crimean Tatar mass media, the prohibition of activities of authorities of the Parliament and the persecution of its leaders”, – reminded in the statement.

The EU called on the Russian authorities to release the prisoners representatives of the Crimean Tatar people, as well as other Ukrainians in the Crimea.

“All cases of violation of human rights, particularly disappearances, torture and murder must be thoroughly investigated,” – said Mogherini.
