UN 2 Aug. /TASS/. Russia has reliable information about the involvement of intelligence agencies of some countries to organize the supply of weapons to terrorists in the middle East and North Africa and are ready to share this data. This was stated on Wednesday, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia at the meeting of the Security Council on combating terrorism.
According to him, the activities of international arms dealers “has been intensified in the backdrop of the crisis in the Middle East and North Africa”. The diplomat noted that private companies in ongoing armed conflicts in the region “capable of doing only what they allow you to make state.”
“The Russian side has sufficient information from credible sources as to who indulges in unscrupulous dealers, and often participates in organizing the supply of weapons to terrorists. This involved some stakeholders of some countries, including the security services. If need be, we’ll be ready for these specific data to share. Consider this situation unacceptable and we will continue to take steps to help remedy the situation by joint efforts of the world community”, – said sebenza.
The UN security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution on combating the supply of terrorists, small arms and light weapons. The Russian Ambassador expressed regret that the document did not reflect some of the proposals of Moscow, including the initiative to introduce a “comprehensive economic and trade embargoes” against the territories controlled by the terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG, is prohibited in Russia). According to Nebenzu, the idea of the Russian Federation, aimed at tightening control over the circulation of weapons in the region, “stumbled again on the stubborn resistance of” some members of the security Council.
“We cannot understand why it is done and what interests can be justified. We lose the opportunity to adopt a joint and effective solution. And yet – we’re wasting time. And the terrorists this situation is used, retain their fighting capacity and expect, apparently, that some of their “patrons” including state agencies, will continue to support them”, – said the permanent representative of the Russian Federation.
Vassily Nebenzia, for the first time speaking at a meeting of the Security Council stressed that combating terrorism is Russia’s “absolute priority in the UN”. According to him, despite the efforts of the international community, “a full-scale external aid terrorists with weapons is not terminated,” and fight with them in Syria and Iraq “continues almost as much as it was the Second world war.”
He confirmed Russia’s readiness to “comprehensive cooperation with anti-terrorist structures of the UN, including on gun issues”, calling on delegations of other countries to follow the example of Moscow and to work actively in this direction.
