The meeting U.S. Secretary of state and foreign Minister of Germany took place in Berlin.

On may 31 at a meeting in Berlin, US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo and foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Maas discussed the situation in Ukraine. About it on joint a press-conferences were reported by Pompeo, reports “Voice of America”.

US state Secretary thanked Germany for its cooperation on the question of “sanctions, which punish Russia for its aggression in Ukraine and the use of chemical weapons in the UK.”

“It is important to monitor developments in Ukraine. This is also true for the Minsk process. Here we need progress. We overcame obstacles here and want as soon as possible to establish cooperation at different levels in the channel format or on other levels,” said Pompeo.

Maas noted the need for cooperation between the US and Germany, including Ukraine.

“Many of the conflicts and challenges facing us can be solved only in coordination and cooperation with our American friends, and we intend to do that… This is true in respect of Ukraine”, – he said.

The Minister believes that Russia should “immediately take constructive steps… in Ukraine in the first place.”

In 2014, immediately after the annexation of Crimea, in Eastern Ukraine, Russia has begun armed aggression. Fighting underway between Ukraine’s Armed forces on the one hand, and the Russian army and Russian-backed militants, who control part of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, on the other. Officially, Russia does not recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite Ukraine presented the facts and evidence.

Negotiations on conflict settlement are being conducted in Minsk (Ukraine – Russia – OSCE) and the channel (Ukraine – Russia – Germany – France) formats.

The heads of state of the Normandy format met for the last time on 19 October 2016 in Berlin.

May 30 the Secretary of national security Council and defense of Ukraine Alexander danyluk said that the meeting in the Normandy format could be held in mid-July 2019.

May 31 Maas reported that he had discussed with the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky and Minister of foreign Affairs of France Jean-Yves Le Drianon how to “spice up” the Minsk process. He stressed that to achieve peace in Donbass is possible only in the framework of the Normandy format.
