U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said Thursday that NATO continues to play a vital strategic role in ensuring security in the world.

“I think that NATO remains important, perhaps one of the most important strategic partnerships in history,” said Pompeo in a joint press conference with the foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Maas.

According to Secretary of state, in view of the key role of the Alliance requires that all members fulfil their commitments to defence spending.

Foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Maas in turn did not share the opinion of the President of France Emmanuel Makron about “brain death” NATO due to the lack of coordination within the Alliance.

“I do not agree with the (statement if) on brain death of NATO. I believe in international cooperation,” said Maas.

“Our key interest is to ensure the safety… And so we are grateful to our American partners for their contributions to safety,” the Minister added.

Earlier the President of France Emmanuel macron said about “brain death” NATO due to the complete lack of coordination on strategic decisions between the United States and its NATO allies, particularly Turkey.

“You (NATO – if) there is no coordination in strategic decision-making between the United States and its allies in NATO,” he added, noting that “it is necessary to clarify what are the strategic goals of NATO”.

Macron said that Europe is “on the brink” and again called for “extension” of defense capabilities in Europe.
