The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko during the meeting with the Minister of foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius expressed his belief that the international community must respond firmly to Russia’s decision to simplify the rules of issuing Russian passports to residents of certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and urged the European Union to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation in June.
“The two sides condemned the recent decision of the President of the Russian Federation on a simplified procedure of issuing Russian passports to citizens of Ukraine residing in the temporarily occupied territories of Russia in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It was noted that this is a deliberate and illegal step of the Kremlin in direct contradiction with the Minsk agreements and undermines peace process in the Donbas… Ukraine’s President has urged the EU to toughen sanctions against Russia during the next revision of the appropriate mode in June”, – is spoken in the message published on the website of the Ukrainian President on Thursday evening.
P. Poroshenko expressed the belief that the international community must respond firmly to these destructive actions of Russia during a meeting of the UN Security Council, convened on the initiative of Ukraine.
The head of state expressed gratitude for consistent support on the part of Lithuania’s sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as a clear position of the Lithuanian side to counter the aggressive policy of Russia.
“The Lithuanian side highly appreciated the personal contribution of Petro Poroshenko in the free and fair nature of the presidential elections in Ukraine, which showed that the country is confidently moving along the democratic path of development”, – stated in the message.
