TOKYO, March 18. /Offset. TASS Alex Sarachev/. The governments of Japan and Russia at a meeting in Tokyo the first consultations on joint economic activities on southern Kuriles presented plans for concretization of the work on this topic in the fields of medicine, tourism and fisheries. As reported by the Agency Kyodo, stated Deputy foreign Minister of Japan Takeo Akiba after talks with his Russian counterpart Igor Morgulov.
Akiba also noted that “the parties have agreed to discuss the possibility of visiting the Islands former residents through Charter flights”.

As noted by the Minister of foreign Affairs of Japan, Fumio Kishida, the results of the first Russian-Japanese consultations on joint economic activities on southern Kuriles will be considered during the upcoming March 20, talks of the foreign Ministers of the two countries .
“On March 20 in Japan, comes to visit, the foreign Minister (Sergei) Lavrov. The results of the consultations will be taken into account during our negotiations. In addition, I would like to associate them with the visit of the Prime Minister (Shinzo) Abe to Russia, to be held as soon as possible” – quoted Kishida channel HNK.
In Tokyo on 18 March, there were consultations on joint economic activities on southern Kuriles, which were attended by the Deputy foreign Minister of Japan Takeo Akiba and his Russian counterpart Igor Morgulov. Negotiations in a format “two plus two” with participation of the heads of foreign and defense Ministers of Japan and Russia, as well as a separate meeting, Kishida and Lavrov will be held in Tokyo on March 20.
Following the visit of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin on 15 and 16 December last year in Japan and his meetings with Abe joint statement was adopted, which noted that an important step on the way to the conclusion of a peace Treaty could be the beginning of consultations on joint economic activities of Japan and Russia on the South Kuril Islands. In addition, the parties believe that this statement and any achieved on the basis of the agreement on establishment of joint economic activities and its implementation should not prejudice the positions of Russia and Japan on the issue of a peace Treaty.
