MOSCOW, June 12. /TASS/. The Russian Timur Safin won the silver medal in the individual men’s foil tournament of the European championship on fencing, held in Tbilisi.

In the final, the Russians with the score 12:15 lost to Italian Daniele Garozzo who is an Olympic champion (2016) and world champion (2015) in this discipline. This medal was the first for the Russian team at the championship.

Bronze prize-winners of competitions the Italian Giorgio Avola and Frenchman Jeremy KADO, who in the semifinals lost to Safin.

In the competition of foil fencers also participated Dmitry Zherebchenko and Alexey Cheremisinov, who finished the tournament in the 1/8 finals, and Timur Arslanov, who lost to the opponent in the 1/16 finals. Earlier in Tbilisi also held individual competitions sablistok . Russian fencers Sofia Pozdnyakova (got eliminated in the 1/4 finals), Anastasia Bazhenova, Anna Bashta and Valeria Bolshakova (all completed the tournament in 1/16) failed to win medals.

Safin is the European champion in 2016 in individual and team foil. At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro he won the gold medal in the Russian team in the team foil and bronze in the individual foil.

The European championship will end on June 17.
