Airlines of the world worsened the performance of delivery of passengers ‘ Luggage last year, increasing the number of cases of mishandling by 8.9% to 24.8 million, according to the annual report of IT services supplier to the aviation industry SITA.

At the same time, the report notes that this number is less than 0.6% of the total number transported by the airlines baggage in 2018 in the amount of 4.3 billion

Last year baggage problems arose for 5,69 piece of Luggage per thousand passengers, compared from 5.57 in 2015 (an increase of 2.2%).

The growth of passenger traffic in 2018 amounted to 6.6% and reached 4,36 billion people, down from 4.08 billion in 2017.

Meanwhile, in 2007 the share of mishandled Luggage per thousand passengers decreased by 47%, while the turnover increased by 76%. The costs associated with the search of Luggage and return to owners decreased by 43% to $2.4 billion compared with $4.22 billion in 2007.

In June of 2018 entered into force resolution of the International air transport Association (IATA) requiring you to track every checked bag on all the way. Over the past year, more and more airlines and airports have begun to monitor and take into account the Luggage in four main points: at the reception of the initial registration, during loading on Board the aircraft, in case of overload on the connecting flight and upon issuance to the passenger upon arrival.

SITA points out that investment in advanced technology has already had a positive impact on the situation with Luggage.

“We analyzed data on approximately 10 million pieces of Luggage through the service BagJourney and used machine learning technology to check the reliability of the results. Tracking Luggage at a stage of loading allows airlines to reduce cases of mishandling of baggage by at least 38%. If earlier they did not use the tracking function, the rate decreased up to 66%”, – said the head of SITA for the development of solutions to track baggage Peter Drummond.

Error when moving Luggage from one plane to another or between airlines, according to 2018, were again the main reason for his delay. The share of Luggage, which need to be transferred for transit flights, had 46% of the total number of baggage, but this figure has slightly decreased compared to 2017, the report says.
