The representative of the European external action service (EBU) has expressed concern in connection with the attack on the Egyptian security forces on the editorial Board of the independent media resource “Mada IFSW” and reminded the Egyptian authorities of their obligations to ensure freedom of the press.
“Permanent restrictions of civil liberties, including restrictions on the freedom of expression and Assembly, and restrictions on freedom of the media in Egypt are cause for concern,” reads the statement of the representative of the EMU.
“Independent and diverse media are key to a functioning democracy. Journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear of persecution, in accordance with the Egyptian Constitution and international obligations of Egypt,” – said in the message.
The statement noted that during a RAID on Sunday, some journalists were detained for several hours, unable to communicate or to talk to a lawyer.
