East Africa is suffering from massive locust plague, and the population of some countries in the region were on the brink of a major food crisis and even famine. The UN has urged the international community to help affected countries in the fight against locusts. Otherwise, by the summer the number of these insects can be multiplied 500 times, with the result that pests can get in other countries.

Geography locust

According to the food and agriculture organization (FAO), a locust invasion began in Yemen, where since the beginning of 2019 has created favorable environment for the rapid multiplication of the desert or the African locust. In addition, from June 2019 the numerous swarms of locusts are present in India, Iran and Pakistan, where the insects continue to breed. It is also noted that some of the pests migrated to southern Iran, where recent heavy rains allowed them to lay eggs, and in the spring of 2020 may be new swarms of locusts.

From Yemen desert locust in the spring of 2019 went to Africa. Having flown the Red sea, pests appeared in areas of Eastern Ethiopia and Northwest Somalia. From there, the insects continued invasion of the South and West. At the end of 2019 locusts penetrated into South-West Somalia, and from there to the North of Kenya.

In Egypt, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen also there is an active reproduction of the pest, which can lead to the widening of locust swarms in the coming months.
