The Japanese government on Friday opened the meeting of the Council on joint economic activities on Southern Kuriles, which planned to discuss the results of the first visit of the Japanese delegation of officials and businessmen to the Islands. As stated before the consultations, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Japan, Fumio Kishida, Tokyo is now actively working on this issue in connection with the preparation for the summit, the third East economic forum (WEF) in Vladivostok.

“The trip study group on the four Northern Islands have made a significant contribution to the discussion of the joint Japanese-Russian economic activity. The Japanese side will continue to work actively on this issue in preparation for the summit, to be held at the WEF in Vladivostok in September of this year,” he said .
“I thank everyone for their hard work in this area and I hope that it will continue in the same spirit,” added Kishida. According to him, in anticipation of the next meeting of the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin must discuss many more questions related to the possible implementation of economic activities, including the legal and legislative norms.
The meeting is also attended by the Minister of economy, trade and industry, and Hiroshige Seko, special Advisor to the Prime Minister eiichi Hasegawa, who led the Japanese delegation during a trip to the Southern Kuriles.
The visit of the Japanese delegation, consisting of 69 people on the Russian Islands held from June 27 to July 1. The group, which included officials and representatives of business circles, visited Kunashir, Iturup and Shikotan, where he familiarized himself with the condition of the infrastructure and explore opportunities to implement joint projects. In total they were able to explore 64 facilities, including hospitals, power plants, sports centers and the construction of the hotel complex.
Expected consultations on the results of this trip with the Russian side at the level of Deputy foreign Ministers will be held in late August in Moscow. The agreement was reached following the meeting, Abe and Putin at the G20 summit in Hamburg.
