The presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Poland have developed a plan de-escalate the situation in Belarus. On Wednesday, August 12, said the President of Lithuania Gitanos Nausea at a press conference.
“It contains three items to resolve the situation,” said Nausea. According to him, the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Poland is ready to mediate in resolving the crisis in Belarus.
According to Nausea, the Belarusian authorities must stop the use of force against protesters and release those detained during the protests. The third point of the plan is the beginning of a dialogue with representatives of civil society.
“With the adoption of this plan, our country is ready to mediate in the process of exiting the crisis,” – said the Lithuanian President.
He also said that the plan for resolving the crisis proposed to establish in Belarus the so-called national Council for dialogue between the authorities and the opposition.
In case of failure of this mediation initiative against Belarus may be imposed by the European and national sanctions, said Nausea.
In turn, foreign Minister of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius said that the Belarusian authorities should hold a new election, as held on 9 August were not democratic.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of state Michael Pompeo said that the US is experiencing a large concern for the destiny of Belarus after the presidential elections. The head of the state Department called the elections “unfair”.
Recall, the European Union does not consider the presidential elections in Belarus “neither free nor fair” and considers the possibility of imposing sanctions against those responsible for the violence.
