Russian athletes because of the removal of the Russian Olympic Committee will not be able to perform at the Games in 2018 under the national flag. However, the IOC left the opportunity to go to South Korea athletes who will enter the competition under the Olympic flag and the status of Olympic athlete from Russia (OAR). Currently part of the Russian delegation to the Games includes 168 athletes.

“The Olympic flag, under which the opening ceremony will team Olympic athletes from Russia, will be borne by the volunteer, appointed by the organizing Committee of the Games,” – said Pozdnyakov.

Our athletes competed under the Olympic flag at the Games two – year-old in Barcelona in 1992 and the winter of that year, Albertville. Those teams included athletes from former USSR republics (except Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). The standard bearers of the teams was the wrestler Alexander Karelin and biathlete Valery Medvedtsev. Thus, for the first time in the history of the national team of the USSR/Russia/United team at the Olympics the flag under which the team will speak at the opening ceremony will carry the athlete.

The Olympic games will be held in Pyeongchang from 9 to 25 February. The opening ceremony of the Games will be held on February 9, beginning at 14:00 GMT.
