The organization of Russia’s vote on amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation on the occupied territory of the Ukrainian Crimea, as well as the organization of voting of persons who are owners of illegally issued passports of the Russian Federation will have political and legal consequences, said the Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vasily Bodnar.
“Voting in the occupied Ukrainian territory of Crimea, as well as the organization of voting of persons who are owners of illegally issued passports of the Russian Federation will have for the Russian political and legal consequences. The international community has a fairly wide range of instruments for an appropriate response from the political statements of condemnation of Russia’s actions to non-recognition results in part of the occupied territories and the extension of the sanctions and political pressure. The extension of the stay of Putin in power is the continuation of the aggressive policy of Russia, and our society, and the world should understand it. Do this for every ordinary Russian citizen remains a question”, – he told in interview to Agency “Interfax-Ukraine”.
Bodnar said that Ukraine appealed to international partners to condemn the organization “vote” on the temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea and city of Sevastopol and the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, including by enhancing sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation.
“First, we expect political solidarity regarding the fact that voting, especially in the occupied territories, are considered illegitimate. Secondly, in respect of persons holding such voting will be subject to personal sanctions, non-admission in the territories of States, by which such sanctions are applied. I am sure that the world community will rightly see how Russian government is trying to force the population of the occupied territories, to exercise political action in favor of the Kremlin leadership,” he explained.
Deputy foreign Minister also expressed hope that citizens of Ukraine who are forced to reside on the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, refuse to participate in this from the point of view of international law as illegitimate the vote.
“Instead of following the principle of legality of carrying out of voting and do not carry them in the occupied territories of Ukraine, which casts doubt on the whole voting process, the Russians are aggressively trying to spend it in the Crimea and encouraged the citizens of Ukraine, which they forcibly gave their passports to go to the polling stations. There is a double meaning: first, to demonstrate the alleged “their law” in the occupied territory, which is a direct violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, the second is to artificially increase the number of votes for the extension of the stay of Putin in power,” said Bodnar.
In his opinion, therefore, in this case the only answer is the continuation of sanctions by the international community, Ukraine, separate countries to demonstrate country-aggressor that their actions do not go unpunished.
