Hong KONG /Hong KONG/ 3 April. /Offset. TASS Alexander Zyuzin/. The portrait of Mao Zedong, made famous by the American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), went under the hammer in Hong Kong $12.7 million reported by the organizers of the auction of Sotheby’s auction house.
The buyer of the painting was made by an Asian collector who wished to remain anonymous. The lot was within their estimated value, which amounted to 90-120 million Hong Kong dollars (us$11.6 15.5 million).
A portrait of the founder of the PRC was completed in 1973 in silkscreen using acrylic paints. The “great helmsman” is depicted in a red jacket on a brown background, his face painted yellow. Only Warhol completed a series of colorful large-format portraits of Mao in the same style, the size of the present canvas is estimated at 127 on 106,6 cm
Andy Warhol is an iconic figure in the history of the movement in art, which received the name of “commercial pop art” . In 1962 he created his popular painting “Green bottles “Coca-Cola” and “soup Cans “Campbell”, and then began to work actively as a photographer and artist with the stars. Master of shocking and Creator of portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Liza Minelli, Jimmy Carter, he remains one of the best selling artists of our time.
