The carrier rocket “Soyuz-FG”

TASS-FILE. On 21 March 2018 20:44 MSK is scheduled to launch from Baikonur of the carrier rocket “Soyuz-FG” with manned spacecraft “Soyuz MS-08”. On the International space station (ISS) will be sent the members of expedition ISS-55/56. In the main crew consists of Oleg Artemyev (Russia), Andrew Feustel (USA) and Richard Arnold (USA). For Artemyev and Arnold this will be the second flight, and for Feustel third. Docking of “Soyuz MS-08” with the station is scheduled for 23 March at 22:41 GMT.

“Soyuz-FG” – the Russian disposable rocket. Belongs to the family of Soyuz rockets that have been created on the basis of the first Intercontinental ballistic missile R-7 developed by OKB-1 (now Rocket and space Corporation RKK “Energy”), under the guidance of the designer Sergei Korolev.

Expedition ISS-55/56 . Dossier

The main purpose of the launches to the ISS, manned spacecraft of the Soyuz type (developed by RSC Energia). Currently, the “Soyuz-FG” space is the only missile used by Russia in the manned program. In addition, it can help in combination with the upper stage “Fregat” (NPO Lavochkin) are the launches of spacecraft under the commercial programs.

Developer and manufacturer Samara space-Rocket center “Progress”. The rocket created on the basis of “Soyuz-U” (launches were conducted in 1973-2017 years). The use of “Union-FG” upgraded engine with a new nozzle heads (the abbreviation “FY” is displayed in the title) made it possible to increase the capacity of the media to 250-300 kg.


“Soyuz-FG” – a three-stage booster of the middle class. Length – 49.5 m, the maximum diameter is 10.3 metres and launch weight – about 313 tons, a maximum lifting capacity of 7.4 T.

In the first stage of the flight the engine is running four side blocks and Central blocks, the second (after the separation of the lateral blocks) – only the engine of the Central unit. In the side blocks installed engines RD-107A, in the Central – RD-108A (developed by NPO “Energomash” in Khimki, Moscow oblast). Engine start is made on Earth, which gives the possibility in case of a failure to cancel the launch. The third stage provides the RD-0110 of the Design Bureau Khimavtomatika (Voronezh). All the engines use oxygen-kerosene fuel.

In the “Soyuz-FG” can be applied the fairings with a diameter of 2,7; 3,0; 3,3 or 3,715 m.

Launches of “Soyuz-FG” are carried out from the Baikonur cosmodrome, which Russia leases from Kazakhstan.

The first missile was launched on 21 may 2001, and launched into space the automatic ship “Progress M1-6” with cargo for the ISS. Then use it was launched two cargo spacecraft series “Progress M1” (2001 and 2002), which is undergoing flight testing “Soyuz-FG”. The first launch from the manned spacecraft took place on October 30, 2002: on-orbit was launched “Soyuz TMA-1”. The first missile was launched with the upper stage “Fregat” 2 June 2003: in space, was launched by the European interplanetary station Mars Express.

Just to 20 March 2018 made 62 run booster – all successful. Three of them held with cargo spacecraft (Progress M1), 49 – manned (including 22 – with the “Soyuz TMA”, 20 “Union TMA-M”, seven with “Union MS”), ten with the upper stage “Fregat”.

During the previous run, Dec 17, 2017, the rocket “Soyuz-FG” launched into space manned spacecraft “Soyuz MS-07” with members of the ISS-54/55.


The Federal space program of Russia for the years 2016-2025 provides for the use of “Soyuz-FG” manned launches until 2020. Then, as planned, it will replace the rocket “Soyuz-2.1 a”.
