For illegal detention of 24 Ukrainian sailors in the U.S. intends to impose sanctions against 24 top officials of Russian security services and their entourage.

The U.S. Congress has prepared new sanctions against the Russian Federation for the illegal detention of crews and ships of Naval forces of Ukraine. On Friday, July 19, reports the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States.

“For the consideration of the house of representatives passed a bipartisan bill calling for the introduction of us sanctions against 24 top officials of the Russian special services and those close to him for the unlawful detention of 24 Ukrainian sailors and three ships of the Ukrainian Navy in the Kerch Strait in November last year. The bill says that sanctions will remain in force until Russia withdraws sailors and ships”, – stated in the message.

In a statement on the submission of the bill us lawmakers noted that “the international community must not stand by while Russia intensifies its aggression in Europe and the world.

“This bill is a powerful message to the Ukrainian seafarers and their families that USA do not forget about their heroic struggle for the defence of the democratic path and sovereignty of their country. Urge my colleagues to support this bipartisan bill, and Russia to immediately release Ukrainian sailors,” – said the congressmen.

Co-authors of the bill is the congressional Democrats Marcy Kaptur and Michael Quigley and Republican Andy Harris and Brian Fitzpatrick.

Recall, 17 July in Russia extended the detention for three months Ukrainian sailors.

At the end of November 2018, Russian forces seized three Ukrainian ships on the approach to Kerch Strait.

During the attack, was detained 24 Ukrainian sailors held in prison in Moscow. Russia has put forward them on charges of “illegal border crossing”.
