News of Ukraine: the UN security Council adopted a statement regarding the security situation in the Donbas.
The UN security Council condemned the escalation of hostilities in the Donbass with the use of forbidden heavy weapons, and expressed full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and urged the parties to implement the Minsk agreements.
This is stated in the adopted on Wednesday, the presidential statement of the UN security Council.
“The Security Council expresses serious concern at the recent deterioration of the situation in the sphere of security in the East of Ukraine”, – the document says.
It is emphasized that this has a significant impact on the security of the civilian population.
“The Security Council condemns the continuing violations of the cease-fire, especially with heavy weapons prohibited by the accords, which resulted in tragic deaths, including among civilians,” the statement reads .
In this regard, the security Council called for the implementation of the commitments on disarmament and the immediate withdrawal of heavy weapons under the Minsk agreements.
In addition, the statement stressed the need to expand the efforts of humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected regions. The UN Security Council also expressed full support for the Special monitoring mission (SMM) of the OSCE and called on all parties to facilitate its work.
“The Security Council reiterates its full support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, stresses the need for strict observance of resolution 2202 (2015) adopted a Package of measures to implement the Minsk agreements and called on all parties again to support the peace process and to implement all measures agreed in the framework of the Normandy format and the Trilateral contact group to achieve a rapid progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements”, – said in a statement.
In the last paragraph of the UN security Council reaffirmed “the full support” of Resolution 2166 (2014) regarding the downed Malaysian airlines plane flight MH17.
The presidential statement of the UN Security Council is an official document, endowed with appropriate powers. It is approved by consensus, i.e. without the possibility of veto by the permanent members of the security Council. Although, unlike the UN security Council Resolution, this document is not binding, on the basis of can perform certain actions in the UN.
