A meeting of the UN security Council

The term of office of the mission will be valid until 31 July 2018.

The UN security Council unanimously adopted a decision to extend until July 31, 2018 the authority of the Mission to assist Iraq (UNAMI). As Kommersant reports, the relevant resolution was adopted at the security Council meeting on Friday.

Members of the security Council also asked UN Secretary-General, antónio Guterres, to the 15th of October this year to prepare recommendations for improving the effectiveness of the mission.

The UN security Council stressed that the mission has had a huge impact on the fight against the Islamic state in Iraq, which “represents a serious threat to the future” of the country. The meeting also noted that “the only way to counter terrorism is to work with all Iraqis on issues of security, as well as in the political sphere.”

Recall that UNAMI was established by the Security Council on 14 August 2003 . Later the mission was evacuated to Jordan and returned to Baghdad in a truncated format in August 2004.
