Kyiv reiterates its consistent support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.

Ukraine strongly condemns the conduct and does not recognize the results of the so-called parliamentary elections in the occupied Russian territory of the Tskhinvali region of Georgia, which took place on 9 June. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of foreign Affairs.

“Ukraine considers this step as another attempt by Russia and its occupation to legitimize the situation in the occupied territory of Georgia, including as a result of “ethnic cleansing” and numerous other systematic gross violations of human rights – said in a statement the foreign Ministry of Ukraine.

The Ministry stressed that Kyiv supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and peaceful attempts of the Georgian government to reconcile Georgians and Ossetians.

We will remind, on 8 August 2008 armed conflict began between Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Russia, on the one hand, and Georgia on the other. The conflict went down in history as the five-day Russian-Georgian war, during which killed at least 2,000 people.

Following the conflict, Russia recognized the independence of two breakaway Georgian regions and brought in additional troops and weapons.

All States of the world, except Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria, recognize these regions as Georgian territory occupied by Russia.
