Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN noted that Kiev has consistently advocated the need to respect international law.

Permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko said that Ukraine supported the draft resolution of the UN security Council on the status of Jerusalem and called for the need to respect international law, writes UKRINFORM.

“The final status of Jerusalem must be resolved only through negotiations in accordance with security Council resolutions… Ukraine has consistently advocated the need to respect international law. This is particularly important in the context of countering the aggression of Russia, which defiantly ignores the principles of the UN Charter, ” he said.

Yelchenko said that Ukraine supported the draft resolution because the document rejects the seizure of territories .

“This provision is of key importance for Ukraine in the context of the temporary Russian occupation of the Crimea and ORDO and efforts for de-occupation”, − the diplomat said.

In addition, according to Yelchenko, Ukraine supports the principle of coexistence of two States − Israel and Palestine.

Earlier, Egypt submitted a draft resolution providing for the condemnation of the decisions of countries regarding the sole determination of the status of Jerusalem before the UN security Council.

During the voting, the document was blocked by the US delegation. The U.S. permanent representative to the UN, Nikki Haley has called the vote for this resolution an insult.
