Special envoy of the US state Department in Ukraine Kurt Volker on Saturday, will meet in Belgrade with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov. The main issue of the meeting is to address the situation in the Donbas.

“The meeting is scheduled for October 7 in Serbia,” – said “Interfax” the Director of the Center for political conjuncture Alexei Chesnakov

Earlier, a source familiar with the situation told Interfax that during the meeting the sides will focus on the study of “mechanisms of initial stabilization” in the Donbas.

“The most urgent issue on how to achieve a stable peace so that people would not be killed, and international organizations such as the OSCE could work in the conflict zone safely and stably. This should be the first step towards a real settlement of the situation in a peaceful way – whether “blue helmets” of the UN or other mechanisms of settlement,” – said the source.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin does not expect any concrete results from the meeting and believe that it is most important for Washington to get information about the Ukrainian settlement directly from the participants of the Minsk process.

“In this case the negotiations are not aimed at a specific result. Is the process of synchronizing positions, comparing notes, sharing information from first hand”, – told reporters in last Thursday’s press-Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov.

“The United States, as you know, are not participants in the “Normandy format”, they are not a guarantor of the Minsk agreements. But, nevertheless, of course, to Washington it’s important to get that information first hand from countries that participate in the Minsk process,” he said.

Earlier, the former U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Tefft said that K. Walker and V. Surkov can discuss at the meeting in early October, the question about the UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas.

“Kurt Volker will meet with Vladislav Surkov in early October. We believe it is important to try to come to an understanding on the question of the mandate of a possible peacekeeping mission,” the Ambassador said in a farewell interview to the edition “Kommersant”.

C. Walker earlier told reporters in Kiev that at an upcoming meeting plans to discuss with Vladimir Surkov, the issues of restoration of territorial integrity and security of Ukraine.

The first meeting of C. Volker and V. Surkov was held on August 21 in Minsk.
